Remembering Alaba Lawson: A Trailblazer in NACCIMA’s Journey

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has been shaped by the remarkable contributions of Ms Alaba Lawson. As a former Director General of NACCIMA and the first female National President, Lawson’s impact on the organization is undeniable. Her vision and dedication propelled NACCIMA to new heights, leaving a lasting legacy.

During her tenure, Lawson spearheaded numerous initiatives and collaborations with national and international institutions. One notable achievement was the chambers Accreditation Programme, which showcased her commitment to elevating NACCIMA and chambers across Nigeria.

Lawson’s influence extended beyond the borders of Nigeria. In 2019, she led a delegation to the 74th Session of the UNGA in New York. During this visit, she emphasized the importance of collaboration and signed a memorandum of understanding between NACCIMA and UN WOMEN. This partnership aimed to empower women in the private sector through the National Women movement for Economic Empowerment of Women (NAWORG).

As a former High Commissioner to Australia, Lawson recognized the potential for collaboration in the mining sector. She organized an economic visit to Australia, connecting NACCIMA members with Australian mining investors. This initiative showcased her dedication to the development of the Nigerian mining industry.

Lawson’s impact was not limited to Australia alone. She also championed an economic visit to Israel in 2019, further strengthening international ties and exploring opportunities for economic growth.

At the regional level, Lawson played a significant role in FEWACCI, the West African sub-regional body. Her contributions were instrumental in fostering economic cooperation and integration among West African countries.

While she had her imperfections like any human being, Lawson’s visionary leadership, grassroots approach, and unwavering determination set her apart. She was a true trailblazer who fearlessly pursued her goals and inspired others to do the same.

In honour of Alaba Lawson’s memory, it is crucial to continue expanding and developing the chambers movement across Nigeria. This will create a platform for inclusive economic growth and ensure that no one is left behind. Let us remember her as a pioneer and continue her legacy of progress and empowerment within NACCIMA and beyond.
