Big Changes in the Senate: New Rules and Committees

The Senate just made some major changes to its rules. Now, newly elected or first-time Senators can’t run for the positions of Senate President or Deputy President. Talk about shaking things up! This amendment was passed during the Senate plenary on Tuesday. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, proposed the motion to amend the Senate Standing Rules. And guess what? It received overwhelming support from all the Senators, regardless of their political affiliations. Looks like they’re all on the same page for once!

But that’s not all, my friends. The Senate also made some other amendments to accommodate new standing committees. They created a brand new Committee on Atomic and Nuclear Energy. This committee will be responsible for overseeing the Nigeria Nuclear Energy Regulatory Commission and the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission. Talk about some serious power!

Oh, and get this: the Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) got split into two separate committees. We now have the Committee on FCT and the Committee on FCT Area Councils. The Committee on FCT will handle all matters related to the FCT, including planning and development. Meanwhile, the Committee on FCT Area Councils will take care of the Area Council Mandate and other important stuff.

Sports enthusiasts, listen up! The Senate decided to divide the Committee on Sports into two committees. We now have the Committee on Sports Development and the Committee on Youth and Community Engagements. The Committee on Sports Development will be in charge of everything related to sports, from national and international activities to sports administration. And the Committee on Youth and Community Engagements will focus on youth development and engagement.

Last but not least, the Senate split the Committee on Solid Minerals, Steel Development and Metallurgy into two separate committees. We now have the Committee on Solid Mineral Development and the Committee on Mines and Steel Development. The Committee on Solid Mineral Development will oversee all things related to solid minerals, like mining and geological survey. And the Committee on Mines and Steel Development will handle matters concerning mines, steel development, and more.

So there you have it, folks! The Senate has made some big changes, and it’s going to be interesting to see how these new rules and committees shape the future. Stay tuned for more updates!
