Environmentalists Fight to Protect Cross River National Park from Destructive Mining

Environmentalists are suing for an immediate halt to mining activities in the Cross River National Park. They claim that mining rights have been granted to two companies, Abdulrasaq & Co. International Mining Limited and Vintage Mining and Exploration Limited, in violation of existing laws. The National Park Service Act and the Nigerian Mineral and Mining Act both prohibit mining in the park. The environmentalists are demanding the withdrawal of mining leases, an environmental impact assessment, and stronger regulations to prevent future violations. The Conservator of Cross River National Park has confirmed that the companies were given licenses to mine in the park, but believes they were issued in error and expects them to be revoked.
