This awesome move is aimed at raising the bar for education in the mining industry. They want to make sure that all the mining engineers, geoscientists, and other professionals in the field have top-notch qualifications.
The event was organized by the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG), which is the regulatory body for all the geosciences, mines, and steel sectors. The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, did the honors of handing out the certificates to the universities in Abuja.
Adegbite had some kind words for COMEG, praising them for their commitment to registering professionals. He congratulated them and urged them to keep up the good work.
Dr. Godspower Ebimotimi Okpoi, the chairman of COMEG, highlighted the significance of education and training in producing competent professionals. He announced that the council would be setting up a committee to review the curriculum and academic standards.
Prof. Zacheus Opafunso, the Registrar and Chief Executive of COMEG, also expressed his appreciation for the accredited institutions. He called on other institutions to cooperate with COMEG for their own accreditation.
