Foreign nationals, including Chinese and Lebanese individuals, are allegedly involved in this illegal trade, further exacerbating the problem. Some state leaders, such as Governor Muhammed Bago of Niger and Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, have taken steps to address the issue and protect their states’ natural resources. However, more needs to be done to prevent the exploitation of Nigeria’s precious resources and ensure sustainable development. The damage caused by illegal mining extends beyond economic losses. It also affects farmlands and water sources, posing serious health concerns for residents. The state governments, particularly in Osun, need to take immediate action to address this crisis and protect their communities. The Federal Government has also recognized the severity of the situation and plans to deploy a security task force to combat illegal mining nationwide. However, it is crucial for both federal and state governments to follow through on their promises and take concrete actions to safeguard Nigeria’s wealth. Mining stakeholders are urging the government to prioritize the responsible use of solid minerals, including gold, for the benefit of all Nigerians. It is time to put an end to the plundering of our common wealth and ensure sustainable development for the nation.
