Enugu State government is cracking down on illegal mining activities in the state. They have reached a settlement agreement with Milhouse Energy Services Limited, a coal mining firm in Awhum. The firm will pay N1 billion into the Enugu State Environmental Remediation Trust Fund and N100,000 tax on every truckload of coal. The government assures that the fund will be managed transparently by an independent committee for the healing of the affected environment. The Awhum coal mining site was sealed by the state government due to lack of environmental impact certification and remediation plans. An Enugu State High Court has also granted an interim injunction against Milhouse Energy Services and African Pits & Quarries Limited. After paying the required fees, Milhouse Energy may resume operations. The state government is determined to protect the environment and ensure that mining activities are carried out responsibly.
