Erastus Asare Donkor Nominated for WAMECA Award: Celebrating Excellence in Journalism

Erastus Asare Donkor, the winner of the 2022 P.A.V Ansah Journalist of the Year award, has been nominated for the West Africa Media Excellence Awards (WAMECA 2023). He is one of four Ghanaians who made it to the WAMECA nominee list this year. This exciting news comes after Erastus received two awards, including the ultimate prize, at the 27th edition of the Ghana Journalists Association Awards. His work on exposing the environmental impact of illegal mining in Ghana was recognized and celebrated.

The WAMECA finalists were carefully selected by a panel of experienced media experts from Africa. They reviewed and assessed the stories submitted by journalists from 15 West African countries. This year, the Awards received an impressive 825 entries from 402 media organizations in the region.

The winners of the WAMECA awards will be announced at a prestigious event on November 11, 2023, at the World Trade Centre in Accra, Ghana. The ceremony will be attended by media experts, high-level personalities, and delegates from sub-regional bodies and civil society groups.

Erastus Asare Donkor’s exceptional journalism has earned him several other recognitions. He recently received the PAV Ansah Communication Award at the 2023 EMY Africa Awards for his investigative report titled ‘Destruction for Gold,’ which shed light on the devastating effects of illegal mining in the country.

Throughout his impressive media career with Ghana’s leading media conglomerate, the Multimedia Group Limited, Erastus has been honored with numerous awards. In July of this year, he was awarded the Environmental Sustainability Personality of the Year by the Department of Planning at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. This recognition was a testament to his unwavering dedication and commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural environment through his work.

In June 2023, Erastus’s outstanding journalism in reporting on human rights, the environment, and irresponsible mining was acknowledged by the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). He was also shortlisted for the prestigious Covering Climate Now Journalism Award for his documentary ‘Destruction For Gold.’

In October 2022, Erastus Asare Donkor was honored by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG) for his documentary ‘Destruction for Gold’ at the Annual Marketing Performance Awards in Accra.

The WAMECA 2023 finalists include journalists from various West African countries, such as Cape Verde, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. The competition is fierce, but Erastus’s exceptional talent and dedication make him a strong contender for the award.
