Empowering Mining Communities for Sustainable Development

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, recently had a visit from the Attah of Igala and President of Kogi State Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Ata Matthew Opaluwa. They had a chat about how important it is for the local communities to be involved in mining activities and work together with the government to make sure everything runs smoothly. Alake made it clear that the government is committed to protecting the rights of the communities and ensuring their safety. He also mentioned that having peace around mining operations will attract more investments in the sector. The government is also working on improving security and making sure that the communities get their fair share from mining operations. The Ata of Igala praised the Minister for his efforts in repositioning the mining sector but raised concerns about unlicensed miners and those who are causing security problems for the locals. He asked for the Minister’s help in addressing these issues and also advocated for the traditional rulers to play a bigger role in protecting the interests of the people. Alake assured HRH Opaluwa that the Ministry’s Mines Inspectorate will be strengthened to check the authenticity of mining agreements and promised to involve traditional rulers in signing agreements on behalf of the communities. To ensure that the communities get their due royalties and their rights are protected, the Minister revealed plans to reposition the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) for better efficiency.
