The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) is taking a stand against unqualified individuals practicing human resources management in Nigeria. President Olusegun Mojeed emphasized the need to address the issue of quackery in the profession during a news conference in Lagos. He highlighted the upcoming 55th International Conference and Exhibition, which will be opened by President Bola Tinubu. Mojeed stressed the importance of punishing those engaged in quackery to uphold global best practices.
One of the major challenges facing the human resources profession is the prevalence of unqualified individuals managing people. Mojeed pointed out that organizations undervaluing the human element often appoint unqualified individuals to oversee human resources. He compared this to the absurdity of putting a non-accountant in charge of finances or a non-engineer to build houses. Mojeed emphasized the need for proper certification in both government and private sector roles.
The CIPM president also highlighted the institute’s responsibility to prevent quackery and fraud in the profession. He emphasized that the CIPM is the only recognized professional body for managing, developing, and regulating people management in Nigeria. Mojeed called for HR professionals to become employee advocates and credible activists, balancing their role between employees and management.
In addition, Mojeed discussed the institute’s recent expansion moves, including the creation of CIPM branches in the United Kingdom and Canada, with plans for a branch in the United States. The institute also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in the UK, bringing numerous benefits for its members. Mojeed stressed the importance of collaboration with other organizations across the public and private sectors.
The CIPM’s efforts to address quackery and promote professionalism in human resources management are crucial for the development of Nigeria’s economy. By upholding global best practices and ensuring that only qualified professionals are entrusted with people management, the CIPM is working towards a more effective and credible HR sector in Nigeria.
