House of Reps Takes a Stand: Declares War on Illegal Mining and Revenue Shortfall

Did you hear about the latest buzz in the House of Representatives? They’re calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency against illegal mining in the country. The House is seriously concerned about the impact of illegal mining on the economy and national security. They want the government to set up a special security task force, including the military, DSS, Immigration Service, Civil Defence Corps, and Police Force, to kick out illegal miners from all parts of the country.

Deputy Majority Leader Ibrahim Abdullahi Halims brought up the motion, and the House totally backed it. They’re even suggesting a special budget allocation in 2024 for the establishment of Mineral Monitoring and Inspection offices in all the senatorial districts. The solid mineral sector’s contribution to the GDP is only 0.63 per cent, and the House is not happy about it.

But that’s not all, the House is also looking into the shortfall in oil revenue. They’re determined to ensure that the government gets value for money from all its agreements. The absence of the Minister of Budget and National Planning stalled the consideration of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, but the House is not letting that slide.

On another note, the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory clarified that the decision to revoke undeveloped lands was made by the previous administration, and the current Minister is just implementing it. They’re also urging property owners in the FCT to pay their ground rent as directed by the Minister.

In addition, the House is putting pressure on the NDLEA to come up with a plan to eradicate drug bunks across the country. They’re not stopping there; the House Committee on Inland Waterways is gearing up to investigate the causes of boat mishaps and find solutions to prevent them.

It’s great to see the House taking action on these important issues. Let’s hope these efforts lead to positive changes for the country. What do you think about these developments?
