Strengthening Security and Development: A Closer Look at China-Africa Relations

A seminar on Africa’s security and the development of China-Africa relations took place in Harare, Zimbabwe, on November 8, 2023. The event brought together officials from the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, scholars in the fields of peace, security, development, and history, and other participants. An Yuejun, the secretary-general of the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD), delivered a keynote speech at the seminar. He emphasised China’s commitment to security cooperation with Africa and its willingness to contribute to the Global Security Initiative. An Yuejun also expressed China’s readiness to work with Zimbabwe to build mutual trust and develop a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Johnson emphasised the mutual commitment of Africa and China to finding better solutions for creating and maintaining peace. She specifically mentioned the need for joint support and infrastructure development in Southern Africa for effective peace training.

The seminar focused on the idea that peace and security are essential for development, and vice versa. Both Africa and China are dedicated to working together to achieve peace and security. The discussions also touched on the importance of Africa’s representation and voice in international organizations, as well as its ability to independently safeguard peace. The seminar highlighted the principles of security cooperation, dialogue, partnership, and win-win results, while strongly opposing unilateralism, hegemonism, protectionism, and interference in other countries’ internal affairs.

The seminar provided valuable insights into the cooperation between China and Africa in the context of security and development. It underscored the shared commitment to peace, security, and mutual support, as well as the importance of infrastructure development for effective peace training in Southern Africa. The event concluded with a renewed sense of collaboration and dedication to building a secure and prosperous future for both Africa and China.
