Empowering Communities: Mining Firms Step Up for Local Development

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has launched a new guideline called the Community Development Agreement (CDA) to prevent disputes between communities and mining companies. According to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, a total of 252 mining companies have signed the CDA to provide basic facilities to host communities in Nigeria. Alake emphasized the importance of the CDA in promoting sustainable mineral resources development and preventing negative impacts on host communities. He highlighted that the CDA is crucial for defining the relationships and obligations between mining companies and their host communities.

During the launch event in Abuja, Alake expressed the need to avoid social crises similar to those experienced in the Niger Delta by the oil sector. He stressed that the CDA can help prevent such crises and support the government’s efforts to diversify the economy. The ministry has observed an increase in compliance with the CDA covenants by mining companies through field monitoring, education, and sensitization exercises. Alake also mentioned the successful signing of CDAs by 252 companies, leading to the implementation of various community projects such as boreholes, electricity, schools, health centres, road constructions, and scholarships based on the needs of the host communities.

However, Alake acknowledged that some companies have not yet signed the agreement and assured that the ministry will enforce compliance to protect the interests of host communities. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that all mining companies comply with the CDA provisions.
