The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has issued a stern warning to foreign entities who are using banditry as a cover for their illegal mining activities in Nigeria. The Minister, Oladele Alake, made it clear that the government is taking decisive action to put an end to this unlawful practice. This warning comes in response to the growing concern over foreign sponsors who are fueling banditry to carry out illegal mining operations in the country.
During a recent visit by the Nigeria-China Chamber of Mines, the Minister emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to establishing a task force that will crack down on illegal miners and their collaborators. Alake also announced that illegal miners have been given a 30-day ultimatum to regularize their operations or face the consequences.
In his statement, the Minister highlighted the government’s intention to organize and regulate small-scale artisanal miners, ensuring that they contribute positively to the country’s economy. He also issued a direct appeal to the foreign sponsors, warning them to cease their support for banditry or be prepared to face legal action.
The Ministry’s firm stance on this issue reflects the government’s determination to tackle illegal mining and protect Nigeria’s natural resources. With the ultimatum in place, it is evident that the authorities are serious about bringing an end to these illicit activities. The message is clear: foreign entities involved in illegal mining through banditry will no longer go unchecked, and the government is prepared to enforce the law to safeguard the country’s mineral wealth.
