Revolutionizing Healthcare and Innovation in Nigeria
Nigeria’s Clinical Trial System Needs a Serious Upgrade, Says NACETEM Director-General
The National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM) has highlighted the lack of competent clinical trial systems in Nigeria, raising concerns about the use of drugs based on conjecture rather than solid testing. Dr. Olushola Odusanya, the director-general of NACETEM, emphasized the need for a more robust approach to drug development and testing during a media parley in Abuja.
Dr. Odusanya expressed his plans to address the issue by collaborating with medical professionals to establish a clinical trial consortium across the country. This initiative aims to ensure that drugs used in Nigeria are thoroughly tested on the Nigerian population, rather than relying on assumptions based on their effectiveness in other regions.
In addition to the focus on medical advancements, NACETEM is also committed to bringing new knowledge and technology to the national economy. Dr. Odusanya revealed plans for a technology infusion programme to facilitate this objective.
Furthermore, the agency is exploring the introduction of new cell-based stem therapy to enhance the medical system. Dr. Odusanya’s vision extends to the mining sector, where NACETEM is dedicated to promoting safe mining practices, particularly at the artisanal level.
The director-general also outlined the National Science and Innovation Policy Strategic Direction, which emphasises the importance of vocational training and certification. He stressed the significance of vocational training in various employment sectors, highlighting the need to maintain a balance between vocational training and higher education.
Dr. Odusanya’s strategic plan for NACETEM includes a strong focus on vocational training, aligning with the agency’s commitment to driving strategic growth and innovation.
In summary, NACETEM’s efforts under the leadership of Dr. Odusanya are geared towards enhancing Nigeria’s clinical trial systems, promoting technological advancements, and prioritising vocational training to support the country’s economic development.
