Hey there, did you hear about Eni’s decision to halt the OPL 245 arbitration with the Nigerian government at the World Bank? It’s pretty surprising – turns out they want to discuss turning the prospecting licence into a production licence. And get this, Nigeria just dropped its $1.1 billion case against Eni a few days ago!

So, what’s the deal with this whole OPL 245 drama? It goes way back to 1998 when the government granted Malabu Oil and Gas Ltd OPL 245. But things got complicated when the licence was taken from Malabu and given to Shell without any bidding. Then in 2010, there was a whole ordeal involving Shell, Eni, and the Nigerian government over the ownership and sale of the oil block.

The companies paid $1.1 billion to acquire the oil block from Malabu, but things got murky from there. Activists raised concerns about the deal being shady and involving questionable dealings. It’s definitely a messy situation.
