Hello there, did you hear about what the Nigerian government recently did? They took action against some mining companies! That’s right, they revoked 1,633 mining titles because the companies failed to pay their fees to the government. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, was pretty upset about it. He mentioned that the companies didn’t pay their royalties and taxes, even though it wasn’t a huge amount. The government even gave the companies a chance by publishing their names in the Federal Government Gazette, but most of them didn’t bother to respond. So, the government decided to reclaim their titles.

The minister made it clear that these titles will be given to more serious investors and warned the previous title holders to leave the areas where their titles were revoked. If they don’t, the security agencies will take action. Alake also gave credit to President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to clean up the mining sector and elevate it to world-class standards. He also called on everyone involved in the sector to collaborate and do things the right way.

Alake didn’t hold back in criticising the companies for not paying their fees. He mentioned that it’s not fair for big corporations to make a profit from mining and then avoid paying the government. He pointed out that the amount they were asked to pay was minimal compared to their revenue. Like, seriously, N1,500 or N2,000 per unit? That’s pocket change for these big shots.

The minister emphasised the importance of having regulations for the mining sector and explained how the system works, from applying for a title to extracting minerals. But he also acknowledged that the government needs to do a better job of monitoring title holders to ensure they follow the rules.

To sum it up, Alake had a strong message for the illegal miners. He basically told them to stop while they’re ahead because the government is coming for them. So, the Nigerian government is taking action against mining companies and illegal miners to ensure everyone abides by the rules. Good move, Nigeria!
