Nigerian Government Revokes 1633 Mining Titles
The Nigerian Government has formally declared the revocation of 1633 operating mineral titles due to failure to pay annual service charges. Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, delivered this announcement during a press conference in Abuja. This decision is part of the Bola Tinubu administration’s effort to reposition the Solid Minerals sector for global competitiveness through a comprehensive and detailed seven-point agenda. As a component of this initiative, the government is steadfast in upholding the sector’s operational regulations and ensuring equitable treatment for all stakeholders. The recent press conference provided insight into some of the policy decisions being implemented by the government.
In accordance with the government’s determination to accomplish its objectives, Minister Dele Alake reaffirmed the commitment to imposing appropriate sanctions in cases of violations and non-compliance as a deterrent to others. The Mining Cadastral Office, the governmental agency responsible for managing titles, has identified 2213 titles for failing to pay service charges in compliance with Nigeria’s Mineral Act. Despite the agency issuing a notice regarding this matter, only 580 titles responded promptly. As the grace period for payment has lapsed, the government has decided to revoke 1633 licenses from those who have not effectively utilized them.
Furthermore, it has been emphasized that the government will not tolerate the reinstatement of the revoked titles, demonstrating a firm stance against non-compliance and infringement of regulations. This announcement underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing accountability and adherence to regulations within the mineral sector.
