NSCDC Thwarts 9 Truckloads of Mining Materials in Benue
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benue recently made a significant interception, as they stopped nine trucks loaded with limonite and lithium. State Commandant, Mr Yakubu Ibrahim, shared this development with the media in Makurdi.
The interception of these mining materials is of great importance, as limonite is a vital element used in the production of various products such as paints, inks, fabrics, plastics, papers, sunscreen, food, and cosmetics. This highlights the severity of the economic sabotage that illegal mining can perpetrate.
One truck, registered as Ogun JGB 344 XB and painted white, was found to be carrying limonite when it was stopped at Jato-Aka in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue on Oct 10. Additionally, eight other trucks, all registered in Lagos, were intercepted on Nov. 19 at Apa Oweto road in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue.
Despite the interception, no suspects have been apprehended at this time, as the drivers and passengers of the trucks managed to escape before the NSCDC could take action. Mr Ibrahim assured the public that an extensive investigation is currently underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Commandant further emphasised the state’s strong stance against illegal mining and affirmed that there will be no leniency for those who engage in these criminal activities. This is a loud and clear message to anyone considering such actions.
In addition to the intercepted mining materials, the NSCDC also presented seven suspects to the media, each with varying charges. One of the suspects, Jacob Apav, was listed on the state government’s wanted list and was apprehended on Nov. 9 at Kwande Local Government Area. He faces charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, cattle rustling, theft, and possession of stolen items. The remaining suspects, Peter Kpandev, Godwin Sarwuan, Monday Nwoba, Jude Ugoh, Kenneth Njoku, and Francis Nnabu, were also arrested on different occasions and in different locations for various crimes.
This is a notable win for the NSCDC in their efforts to combat illegal mining and economic sabotage. The interception of these mining materials and the arrest of the suspects signify their dedication to upholding the law and protecting the state’s resources and economy. As the investigation continues, the public can expect further updates on this case.
