The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in Nigeria has underscored the importance of collaboration between mining communities and the government to enhance efficient mining operations nationwide. Dr. OlaDele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, made this call for collaboration during a courtesy visit from HRH Ata Matthew Opaluwa, the President of Kogi State Traditional Rulers Council in Abuja.

Dr. Alake reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of communities and highlighted the crucial role of host communities and traditional rulers in creating a conducive environment for socio-economic development. He emphasized the significance of a peaceful operational environment and stressed the need for local cooperation in partnership with the government to improve security and attract more investments in the mining sector.

Additionally, the Minister announced that the government is revamping the security architecture to address contemporary security challenges in the sector and integrating royalties for communities into every mining operation.

HRH Ata Matthew Opaluwa commended the Minister’s efforts in repositioning the mining sector but raised concerns about unlicensed miners and those operating without proper agreements, which pose security challenges to locals. He urged the Minister to intervene in addressing these issues and advocated for more prominent roles for paramount rulers in protecting the interests of the people.

In response, Dr. Alake assured HRH Ata Matthew Opaluwa that the Ministry’s Mines Inspectorate will be strengthened to verify the authenticity of mining agreements. Furthermore, the Minister pledged to include Traditional Rulers in signing agreements on behalf of host communities to ensure their interests are protected. The Minister also revealed plans to reposition the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) for improved efficiency, aiming to guarantee the payment of due royalties and safeguard community rights.
