Government’s Commitment to Tackling Security Challenges in Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his dedication to combating and eradicating all forms of terrorism and other security challenges that have been afflicting Nigeria. The National Assembly has demonstrated its endorsement of the President’s initiative to restructure Nigeria’s internal security architecture in response to the country’s security concerns.
During the seventh and eighth convocation of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina, Tinubu delivered an address in which he underscored the federal government’s resolute approach to addressing the nation’s security challenges. He also urged Nigerians to collaborate with the government by providing security agencies with pertinent information about the activities of potential troublemakers in order to counter terrorism in the country.
Furthermore, Tinubu stated that his administration is committed to unleashing the potential of the agricultural and mining sectors to provide funding for graduates interested in pursuing a career in agriculture. He also highlighted the government’s dedication to addressing graduate unemployment and encouraging graduates to participate in the federal government’s Alert Digital Innovation programme. This initiative aims to train two million youths and support a million micro, small, and medium enterprises across Nigeria.
Additionally, the government has tasked the National Universities Commission (NUC) with developing a new blueprint to adjust academic standards in response to the rapidly changing needs of the labour market.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State also expressed his concerns about the adverse impact of security challenges on the educational sector in the state. He lamented the closure of numerous schools in areas that are most affected by banditry, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, conveyed the National Assembly’s backing of the President’s decision to reassess Nigeria’s internal security architecture in response to the nation’s security challenges. During a pre-convocation lecture at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Jibrin emphasized the need to pursue security sector reforms and provide socio-economic opportunities for underprivileged communities, particularly in the North-west region of the country.
Jibrin advocated for tolerance, empathy, cooperative dialogue, human rights, and citizenship duties to be integrated into the nation’s educational curricula. He echoed Tinubu’s assurance that defence and internal security are top priorities for the government. Jibrin expressed solidarity with Tinubu’s resolve to address the security challenges facing the country, stating that Nigeria’s security challenges are significant but not insurmountable.
Moreover, Jibrin mentioned that, with visionary leadership, multi-stakeholder partnerships, and citizen involvement, the nation can gradually overcome the tide of violence and establish a peace-focused structure across Nigeria.
In his concluding remarks, Jibrin shared that he had sponsored a bill for the establishment of the North-west Development Commission in response to the challenges facing the North-west region. The Vice-Chancellor of FUDMA, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi, commended the federal government’s efforts in addressing insecurity and called for the collective support of all stakeholders towards achieving a secure nation.
