The Minerals and Miners Centre (MMC) in Nigeria is urging artisanal and small-scale miners to modernise their operations in order to stay relevant in the global market. The country director, Dr. Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji, emphasizes the need for local miners to adopt global standards and work together to uplift one another.

During an interview with journalists, Dr. Asokoro-Ogaji highlighted the importance of private sector players in Nigeria taking the lead in advancing the sector with a global mindset. She stressed the need for miners to move away from analogue practices and embrace modern solutions for process optimisation.

In an effort to assist local miners in improving their approaches, the MMC is engaged in discussions with global solution providers and private sector-led initiatives. Dr. Asokoro-Ogaji expressed their commitment to helping members establish linkages that will lead to prosperity in the industry.

At the recent Minerals and Miners Conference (MMC) in London, discussions were held with notable companies such as GSL Mineral Processing and K-Mines for exploration and operational optimisation. The focus was on exploring partnerships in diverse areas of business and technology development for the industry.

Dr. Asokoro-Ogaji also emphasized the importance of establishing internships and mentorship programmes to bridge the knowledge gap in the industry. Over 600 Nigerians have already signed up for the programme, demonstrating a clear need for knowledge enhancement in the sector.

The MMC is also in talks with the SRK Team for their expertise in innovative solutions, including reserve estimates and exploratory process solutions. These discussions aim to facilitate effective engagements with financial institutions and governments.

The emphasis on adopting global standards and forming partnerships reflects the MMC’s dedication to propelling the Nigerian mining industry forward. By encouraging modernisation and collaboration, the MMC is paving the way for local miners to compete in the global marketplace.

The efforts of the MMC and its focus on global standards for artisanal miners are indicative of a positive shift in the industry. With the commitment of key stakeholders and the adoption of modern practices, the future looks promising for the Nigerian mining sector.
