Crackdown on Unlawful Timber Operations in Taraba
The Special Taskforce on Illegal Mining and Deforestation has expressed concern about the reported issuance of receipts in Baisa, Kurmi Local Government of Taraba State by the state chapter of the Timbers Suppliers Association. The taskforce, under the leadership of Gen. Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa (retd), communicated their concerns on Thursday in a press statement distributed to journalists in Jalingo, the state capital.
The taskforce strongly disapproved of the association’s actions, citing previous directives that suspended all receipt issuance in accordance with government instructions. Faransa firmly warned the association to immediately cease such practices or face severe consequences. He emphasized that the special taskforce operatives would soon conduct an extensive operation within the state. Additionally, trucks transporting wood found with such receipts will be dealt with decisively, reinforcing the commitment to curbing illegal timber transactions in Taraba State.
In May 2023, Governor Agbu Kefas imposed an embargo on all forms of mining and the felling of trees, particularly rosewood. The taskforce, headed by the retired army general, was inaugurated to thwart the activities of illegal miners and those engaged in illegal felling of trees for profit.
The concern over illegal timber transactions in Taraba is a matter of great significance that has drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies and governmental bodies. The issuance of receipts by the Timbers Suppliers Association, despite previous directives, has sparked apprehension. The government’s efforts to curb such practices and its commitment to environmental conservation are evident in Governor Agbu Kefas’ imposition of an embargo on mining and tree felling, with particular emphasis on rosewood.
It is imperative for the association and other stakeholders involved in timber transactions to adhere to the government’s directives and regulations. The repercussions of non-compliance are serious, as highlighted by Gen. Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa (retd). The planned extensive operation by the special taskforce signifies a resolute stance against unlawful activities in the state.
In conclusion, the measures undertaken by the taskforce and the government to address the issue of illegal timber transactions and deforestation must be upheld with the utmost urgency. It is only through collective adherence to regulations and concerted efforts toward sustainable forestry practices that the state of Taraba can preserve its natural resources for future generations.
