Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Fight for Economic Justice in Nigeria

In November, the commemoration of the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, a prominent figure in the Niger Delta, takes place. It has been 28 years since his passing, and his influence continues to resonate. Saro-Wiwa, a prominent Ogoni activist, was executed by the military government under the leadership of General Sani Abacha for his staunch opposition to the exploitation and devastation of the Niger Delta.

Saro-Wiwa was a fervent champion for the environmental and human rights of the Ogoni people. Through the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), he spearheaded peaceful demonstrations, advocating for equitable oil revenues, political autonomy, and compensation for environmental harm. However, his activism resulted in multiple incarcerations and ultimately an unjust execution alongside eight others in 1995.

Despite the passage of time, Saro-Wiwa’s legacy continues to inspire movements for economic and environmental justice in Nigeria. A resurgence of demands for resource compensation from regions like Niger State has emerged, signalling a shift in the drive to address the issues that Saro-Wiwa passionately advocated for.

Nevertheless, the government’s response to these demands has been limited to superficial measures, such as the establishment of funds and clean-up programmes, rather than confronting the underlying causes of economic exploitation and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta.

The current system of resource ownership in Nigeria, which vests all mineral resources in the federal government, is antiquated and has contributed to the crisis in the Niger Delta. Although attempts have been made to reform this system, substantial change is yet to be seen.

It is imperative to reassess and overhaul the existing legal frameworks governing resource ownership and devise a comprehensive approach to address the economic and environmental challenges in the Niger Delta. This is vital to honour the legacy of Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni 9 and usher in a new era of justice and prosperity for all Nigerians.
