Celebrating Excellence in Metallurgical and Mining Industry: NIMMME’s Honourary Awards and Induction Ceremony
The Nigerian Institution of Metallurgical, Mining and Materials Engineers (NIMMME) recently hosted its 2nd public lecture and induction ceremony to acknowledge distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions to the development of the Metallurgical and Mining industry in Nigeria. The event, held at the transmission company of Nigeria hall in Abuja, included the induction of 110 new members and the presentation of honourary awards to outstanding individuals.
The public lecture, entitled the “Ezekwe-Barberopoulos-Obikwelu (EBO) Honourary Lecture”, was a tribute to the remarkable contributions of Prof Gordian Ezekwe, Mr. Romeo Barberopoulos, and Prof D.O.N. Obikwelu to the industry. Family members and colleagues of the honourees shared touching accounts of their dedication and influence.
The late Romeo Barberopoulos, a trailblazer in the industry, received a posthumous honour for his role in establishing and managing the premier metals foundry in West Africa. His son, Oye Vassily Barberopoulos, accepted the award and recounted his father’s extraordinary journey and his own commitment to carrying on the legacy.
Another notable figure, the late Prof. Gordian Obumneme Ezekwe, was also acknowledged for his significant impact on the industry. The award was accepted by Iyom Dr. Mrs Ajia Ogugua Agagbo on behalf of his family. Professor Onwue Abdulmalik Ibrahim, a close associate of Prof. Gordian Ezekwe, spoke warmly of their collaboration and shared valuable insights into the late professor’s forward-thinking leadership.
The event also recognised the achievements of Prof Daniel O.N. Obikwelu, who was unable to attend but was represented by Dr. Friday I Apeh. Apeh, a Director at the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, delivered a compelling presentation on Prof. Obikwelu’s distinguished career and his impact on the field.
In addition to the honourary awards, NIMMME inducted a total of 110 new members, including 47 Fellows and two Honourary Fellows. The new inductees represent a diverse range of professionals and industry experts who have made significant contributions to the field of Metallurgical and Mining engineering.
The ceremony also included the recognition of esteemed figures such as Prof Samson Duna, Prof Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, Prof Chinedu Nebo, and Engr Jacob Titilope Adeyemo, among others, as Fellows of NIMMME. The event was attended by esteemed dignitaries and professionals from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
Overall, the NIMMME’s honourary awards and induction ceremony served as a fitting tribute to the remarkable individuals who have dedicated their careers to advancing the Metallurgical and Mining industry in Nigeria.
