Bola Tinubu’s Commitment to Strengthening the Fight Against Corruption Highlighted by Fagbemi
The dedication of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to intensify the battle against corruption has been underscored by Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Fagbemi stated that the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) is aimed at ensuring the prudent utilization of resources for sustainable economic growth and development. This commitment is further supported by the release of reports from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), which have resulted in the recovery and mobilisation of $7.2 billion.
Additionally, the United States has expressed its unwavering commitment to collaborating with Nigeria and its global partners to strengthen efforts to combat corruption in the country. Fagbemi revealed that the NACS is based on five pillars: prevention of corruption, public engagement, campaign for ethical re-orientation, enforcement and sanction, as well as recovery and management of proceeds of crime.
Dr Ogbonnaya Orji, the Executive Secretary of NEITI, highlighted the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s fight against corruption, particularly in the oil, gas, and mining sectors. He emphasized the need for partnerships, collaboration in sharing of information and data, human capital development and inter-agency cooperation to address these challenges.
The reports by NEITI also revealed significant losses in the oil and petroleum sectors, further emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to combat corruption. In conjunction with these findings, Jason Smith of the United States Embassy, Nigeria, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to working with Nigeria and its global partners to strengthen anti-corruption activities.
In conclusion, the collective efforts of President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian government, and international partners demonstrate a growing determination to address corruption in the country.
