“I Kept My Move to the UK a Secret from My Parents”- ICAN-UK Chairman
Iliyasu Maisanda, the Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in the UK, graciously shared his remarkable journey from Nigeria to the UK on a scholarship in an exclusive interview.
As a young individual, you were granted the opportunity to pursue your education in the UK through a scholarship. Could you expound on this significant chapter of your life?
Certainly, I embarked on a scholarship to study mining engineering in Cornwall, England, subsequent to completing my ‘A’ levels at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Presented with the option to either study in Nigeria or attain a scholarship for an overseas education, I chose the path of mining engineering due to my fervent aspirations of becoming an engineer. Despite my parents’ unawareness of my decision to venture to the UK, I remained resolute in my pursuit of this opportunity.
What challenges did you face during the phase of transitioning to the UK?
The abrupt transition to the UK gave rise to sentiments of apprehension and ambiguity. Arriving at Gatwick, UK, without notifying my parents coupled with the unfamiliar environment posed as formidable challenges. Fortunately, the gracious assistance of airline personnel provided guidance upon my arrival, facilitating my eventual acclimatization to the new milieu.
How did you perceive life in the UK as a student?
The process of acclimating to life in the UK necessitated adaptation across various spheres encompassing academics, lodging, social interactions, and spiritual engagement. I was fortunate to have an accommodating landlady who extended her support beyond providing lodging, catering to my daily needs. Academically, I discerned similarities in the approach to studies in comparison to my previous educational experiences in Nigeria. Involvement in the university’s hockey team served as a means for me to maintain engagement in sports, subsequently enlightening me on the value of extracurricular activities within university settings.
Could you recount a poignant experience from your sojourn in the UK?
An indelible moment transpired during my internship in Canada. Overcoming administrative obstacles and climatic challenges to secure this opportunity proved to be a transformative journey. However, the encounter with a young girl, embodying innocence and inquisitiveness regarding my appearance, resonates as a cherished memory. This encounter served as a heartwarming reminder of our impact in shaping perceptions within our communities.
In retrospect, my odyssey from Nigeria to the UK has been characterised by personal development, scholastic accomplishments, and tangible encounters that have enriched my perspective on life. I remain indebted to the opportunities that have culminated in my appointment as the chairman of the Institute in the UK. I steadfastly commit to nurturing aspiring accountants and professionals in the pursuit of their aspirations.
