Oyo Traditional Ruler and Others Face Charges for Assaulting Lawyer

A traditional ruler in Saki, Oyo state, Kilani Azeez, along with five others, has been remanded for allegedly assaulting a lawyer, Waheed Lawal. The incident stemmed from disputes related to mining activities in their community.

The group was taken to a Magistrate Court in Saki where they were charged with felony and assault. According to reports, the lawyer was attacked on November 13 in connection with legal advice he had provided regarding mining operations in the area.

The charge sheet stated that the accused, including Rasheed Raheem, Samad Sakariyau, Aliu Asimiyu, Yusuf Nafiu, and Suleiman Jimoh, conspired to commit assault occasioning harm, which is punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000. In addition, they were charged with unlawfully assaulting Waheed Lawal, as per Section 252 and 351 of the same Criminal Code.

During the arraignment, all six of the accused pleaded ‘Not guilty’ to the charges. Subsequently, their counsel, Babakebe, applied for bail, which was granted by the magistrate. Each of the accused was released on a bail sum of N100,000, along with one surety who must be a respected community leader with proper identification.

The case has been adjourned to January 18, 2024, following representation from Lawal’s legal team, consisting of 12 lawyers led by Mr S. A. Abdul Lateef.

This incident highlights the importance of handling disputes and conflicts through legal and peaceful means, rather than resorting to physical violence. It also serves as a reminder of the significance of upholding the rule of law and respecting legal counsel and advice.
