The Nigerian national football team, known as the Super Eagles, has experienced a decline in its dominance in both African and international football due to the absence of a consistent football strategy. Once holding the impressive 5th position in the FIFA rankings in 1994, the team gained global recognition through their victory in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and their qualification for the 1994 World Cup. However, the football landscape in Nigeria has evolved, with a shifting focus of many fans towards European leagues.

As the African Nations Cup draws near, there is a prevailing skepticism regarding the Super Eagles’ prospects for victory, despite their formidable attacking prowess. In a recent interview, former U17 coach John Sam Obuh stressed the necessity for strategic player selection by the current coach, Jose Pisero, in order to yield a successful campaign in Cameroon.

During the interview, Obuh voiced concerns about the team’s defensive performance and the mounting calls for the replacement of goalkeeper Uzoho. He underscored the importance of exercising patience with Uzoho and addressing the team’s defensive strategy as a whole. Furthermore, he urged for patience with Pisero, highlighting the adverse effects of frequent changes within the coaching staff. He emphasized the collective improvement of both players and coaching staff as imperative for the team’s success.

Delving beyond the Super Eagles, Obuh conversed on the diminishing performance of the Golden Eaglets at the U17 level. He attributed this decline to the absence of strategic planning and maturity in coaching selection. Drawing from his personal experiences, he emphasized the significance of training tours and exposure to top-level international and local games for the U17 team. Additionally, he accentuated the need for early preparation, coach appointment, and player development programs to ensure smooth progression from the U17 to the U23 and ultimately to the Super Eagles.

In conclusion, Obuh advocated for a strategic, long-term approach to player development, underscoring the significance of commitment and a coherent football philosophy. His valuable insights illuminate the necessity for planning, patience, and a comprehensive approach to rejuvenating Nigerian football across all levels.
