The All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently preparing for the forthcoming governorship election in Edo State, scheduled for September 2024. The party is faced with a heightened level of competition, as 29 aspirants are vying for the APC’s ticket. Unlike other major political parties, the APC has chosen not to zone the governorship ticket to Edo Central, resulting in a surge of hopefuls from across the state.

Peter Uwadiae, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, attributes the high number of aspirants to the equal opportunities provided by the party. He emphasizes that the absence of zoning has encouraged members to step forward and declare their interest in leading Edo State. Therefore, both seasoned politicians and new entrants have submitted their candidacy.

Notable individuals such as Dennis Idahosa, Oserheimen Osunbor, Kassim Afegbua, and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu have officially joined the race. The lineup also includes former government officials, military personnel, and current members of the National Assembly. The varied backgrounds of the aspirants reflect the increasing appeal of the party in Edo, with each candidate bringing distinct experience and expertise.

Dennis Idahosa, a standout contender, has garnered significant support through his extensive grassroots connections and governance experience. The former House of Representatives member, also known as ‘Denco’ and ‘Mr. Project’, has gained recognition for his philanthropic work and dedication to community development.

Oserheimen Osunbor, a former Governor of Edo State, is another formidable aspirant with a strong political background and deep understanding of the state’s governance dynamics. Additionally, candidates like Mike Onolememen bring a wealth of expertise, having served as Minister of Works and Minister of State for Defence.

The influx of aspirants reflects the party’s growing appeal and the increasing interest in shaping Edo’s political future. As the APC continues to navigate through this pivotal phase, the coming months will undoubtedly witness intense campaigns, strategic alliances, and rigorous vetting processes. The party’s decisions during this period will significantly impact the political narrative in Edo State for years to come.

In this ever-evolving political landscape, the APC is poised to undergo a period of self-reflection and transformation, ultimately shaping the leadership trajectory of Edo. As the party embarks on this journey, it is crucial to uphold the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and fairness to ensure a seamless selection process. The outcomes of this process will undoubtedly have a long-lasting impact on the political landscape of Edo State.
