Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Kogi State Leads to Arrest of 10 Miners and Impounding of 50 Trucks Loaded with Coal
In a recent development, the Kogi State Government has taken decisive action to address the issue of illegal mining in the Ankpa Local Government Area. The announcement was made on Monday evening in Ankpa by the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Hon. Bashiru Gegu. This enforcement initiative is in response to Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive to curb illegal mining across the state.
As part of the operation to halt illegal mining in Kogi, the government has confiscated over 50 trucks carrying coal illegally. This crackdown was made possible with the support of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes.
Hon. Bashiru Gegu emphasised the importance of implementing federal government policy and contributing to revenue generation. He also underscored the government’s previous efforts to encourage federal government-approved miners in the state to register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources. However, these calls were ignored, leading to the destruction of communities due to illegal mining activities. It is imperative to note that illegal mining is strictly prohibited in Kogi State.
A stern warning was issued to all illegal mining companies and individuals to cease their operations or face the full force of the law.
Furthermore, Elder Friday Sani Makama, representing the State Special Task Force on the illegal smuggling of firearms and other related crimes, emphasised that there will be no leniency toward those engaged in illegal mining activities. The present administration is adamant in apprehending and prosecuting individuals involved in such illegal practices.
Governor Yahaya Bello’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining in Kogi State stems from his desire to protect the state’s natural resources and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
Evidently, the recent crackdown on illegal mining in Kogi State demonstrates the government’s determination to uphold the law and safeguard the environment. It serves as a reminder that compliance with regulations is crucial in promoting sustainable mining practices and preserving the state’s natural resources for future generations.
