Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Kogi State Leads to Arrest of 10 Miners and Impounding of 50 Coal Laden Trucks

The government of Kogi state has taken decisive action against illegal mining activities in the Ankpa Local Government Area by apprehending 10 miners who were operating unlawfully. This information was conveyed by the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashiru Gegu, on Monday.

Gegu emphasized that the crackdown on illegal mining in Kogi State is progressing as planned and highlighted that the government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilantes, has seized over 50 trucks transporting coal illegally.

In efforts to adhere to the Federal Government’s policy and bolster revenue generation, the state government has persistently urged miners approved by the Federal Government to register with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources. However, these appeals were disregarded, resulting in flagrant devastation of local communities due to illegal mining activities. As a consequence, the Commissioner reiterated that illegal mining is strictly prohibited in Kogi State.

Issuing a stern warning, the Commissioner cautioned all companies and individuals involved in illegal mining to immediately desist from such activities, as the full force of the law will be brought to bear on anyone found to be violating regulations.

Additionally, Elder Friday Sani Makama, the Director General of the Kogi State Special Task Force on Illegal Smuggling of Firearms and Other Related Crimes, affirmed the commitment of the present administration to clamp down on illegal mining. He asserted that Governor Yahaya Bello is resolute in his determination to halt illegal mining in Kogi State, aiming to ensure that all mining operations in the state comply with established laws and regulations.

The objective of these stringent measures is to prevent unscrupulous individuals from exploiting the natural resources of the state for personal gain. Governor Yahaya Bello has made it clear that it is imperative to put an end to illegal mining in Kogi in order to safeguard the interests of the people.

The resolve of the government in Kogi State to enforce compliance with mining laws underscores its unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and protecting the state’s resources for the benefit of its citizens.
