Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Kogi State: State Government Takes Action

The Kogi State government has adopted a resolute stance against the unlawful mining activities within the state. Engr Bashiru Gegu, the commissioner for solid minerals and natural resources, has been at the forefront of executing the government’s directives to curb illicit mining operations.

Enforcement actions have already borne fruit, with the confiscation of trucks laden with coal that was illegally mined in Ankpa local government area. This proactive campaign was carried out with the assistance of various law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services, Nigeria Police, Taskforce on Illegal Possession of Light Arms, and Kogi State Vigilante Service.

In a statement, Engr. Abubakar Bashir Muhammed underscored the significance of conforming to federal government policies and contributing to revenue generation. He expressed dismay over the lack of compliance from mining companies and individuals, despite previous calls for them to register with the ministry.

The commissioner issued a stern warning to all illicit mining entities, emphasizing that the government would not hesitate to prosecute those found culpable. He affirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that perpetrators of illegal mining activities are held accountable for their actions.

It is imperative for all stakeholders involved in mining operations to adhere to legal regulations and obtain the necessary approvals from the federal government.
