Honourable Bashiru Gegu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, emphasized the government’s dedication to upholding federal policies and generating revenue through legal mining activities. Despite repeated appeals for unregistered miners to adhere to regulations, there has been a flagrant disregard for the law, leading to the devastation of local communities.

Consequently, over 50 trucks transporting illegally obtained coal have been confiscated with the assistance of law enforcement agencies and local vigilantes. The Minister stressed the prohibition of unauthorized mining in Kogi State and issued a stern warning to all violators, declaring that they will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

He described the exploitation of the state’s natural resources by certain individuals as detrimental to the well-being of the people. Additionally, Governor Yahaya Bello’s directive to halt illegal mining reflects the administration’s determination to ensure compliance with the law.

It is crucial for all mining entities in Kogi State to adhere to legal provisions, as the government’s decisive action against unauthorized activities signals an end to the current state of affairs. The state is blessed with approximately 27 commercially viable solid minerals, yet many of these resources remain untapped.

The crackdown on illegal mining operations is a pivotal measure towards promoting ethical and sustainable mining practices, achieving revenue generation, and safeguarding the welfare of local communities. The government’s resolute approach to enforcing mining regulations underscores its commitment to fostering a conducive environment for responsible mining operations in Kogi State.
