Cracking Down on Crime: NSCDC Arrests Suspected Illegal Miners and Railway Vandals in Abuja
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, FCT Command, has achieved significant progress in its efforts to combat criminal activities in Abuja. In a recent development, the Command announced the arrest of eleven illegal miners and two suspected vandals of railway infrastructure. This laudable accomplishment was disclosed in a statement by the Command Spokesperson, Comfort Okomanyi.
The arrests were carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, resulting in the apprehension of 11 suspects engaged in illegal mining activities at Izom, a community located on the border of FCT and Niger State. Additionally, two railway vandals were detained by the Operatives of the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure unit of the command for deliberately vandalising rail tracks and traffic lights in the Wuye Area.
Commandant Olusola Odumosu, while addressing the media during the parade of the suspects, emphasized that such proactive measures would serve as a strong deterrent to other criminals operating within the territory. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating various forms of criminality, particularly vandalism of critical national assets, illegal mining activities, and other related crimes within the FCT.
Odumosu also underscored the economic implications of illegal exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources, warning that such activities not only pose serious threats to the ecosystem but also result in the loss of billions of naira to the country’s coffers. In light of this, the Command remains resolute in its zero-tolerance stance against vandalism and other criminal activities.
The Commandant issued a stern warning to vandals of critical national assets, one chance syndicate, scavengers, and kidnappers, affirming that such criminal activities will not be tolerated within the FCT jurisdiction. He assured the public that the NSCDC is dedicated to identifying and apprehending individuals or groups engaged in criminal activities that undermine the safety and prosperity of the citizens.
The statement further revealed that the apprehended suspects are currently under investigation and will subsequently be charged to court. They are also providing useful information that will aid in determining their level of culpability or affiliation with other criminal syndicates notorious for illegal mining operations within the FCT.
