NCC Sets Deadline for Phone Lines without National Identity Numbers

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive to telecom operators in Nigeria, including MTN, Airtel, and Globacom, to block phone lines lacking National Identity Numbers (NIN) and those with unverified NINs. This measure will come into effect by April 2024.

According to a statement issued by MTN Nigeria to the Nigeria Stock Exchange, individuals who have submitted their NINs but have not been verified will face complete barring on or before March 29, 2024. In addition, phone lines linked to unverified NINs, if fewer than five, are to be blocked by April 15, 2024.

The NCC has stressed that all affected subscribers must undergo a verification process involving biometrics and biodata before their phone lines can be unblocked. The commission aims to enhance the capacity of various service outlets to ensure a smoother and more efficient verification process.

In response to these developments, telecom operators have affirmed their commitment to complying with the NCC directive while collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to expedite the NIN verification process.
