The African Independent Television (AIT) recently conducted an exclusive interview with Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development in Nigeria. This interview, which featured on the “Money Line” show with Nancy Nnaji on the 18th of December, 2023, covered several noteworthy points.

Firstly, the discussion illuminated a notable shift towards Nigeria’s solid minerals, attracting attention from both local and international stakeholders. This heightened interest has led to increased investment in the mining sector, garnering attention from major global players.

Additionally, it was disclosed that a total of 1,633 mining licenses have been revoked due to default in annual service fees, with further measures being implemented to penalize other categories of defaulters.

Dr. Alake also emphasized the government’s dedication to addressing loopholes that have permitted illegal miners to exploit and extract mineral resources from the country.

Another key point from the interview was the successful enforcement of an ultimatum issued to illegal artisanal miners, urging them to formalize their operations by forming cooperatives. Subsequently, over 50 cooperatives have been established.

Prospective mining operators without plans for local value addition, such as processing minerals into finished products, will no longer be granted licenses, as per the Minister’s declaration.

Improvements in security measures within mining environments are set to be implemented, integrating advanced technology and establishing a specialized Mines Police force.

Furthermore, a collaborative effort involving key stakeholders, such as service chiefs, the National Security Adviser to the President, and Defence Ministers, is expected to result in the creation of a new security outfit dedicated to the mining sector.

Dr. Alake also clarified that no state holds the authority to make policy pronouncements on solid minerals, as this falls under the exclusive list. Any deviations from this principle would be considered a violation of the constitution.

Additionally, the Community Development Agreement (CDA) has been revised to create a conducive environment for mining operators, ensuring smooth operations that maximize benefits for host communities.

Finally, the government’s focus on the exploration and exploitation of seven key minerals, including gold, baryte, iron ore, lead/zinc, coal, limestone, and bitumen, has been reinforced based on global demand, with a particular emphasis on lithium.

Since taking office, Dr. Alake has taken significant steps to elevate the profile of the Ministry, assuring that it will make a substantial contribution to the economy in the future.

In conclusion, the interview provided important insights into the actions being taken by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development under the leadership of Dr. Dele Alake, underscoring the government’s dedication to promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices in Nigeria.
