The Raw Materials and Research Development Council (RMRDC) has recently inaugurated a Toxicology Information Centre in the FCT, Abuja, with the primary aim of serving as a repository and processing centre for all toxic and harmful chemical substances, especially within the mining and related sectors of Nigeria.

The announcement of the Centre’s establishment was made by the Director General of the RMRDC, Professor Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, represented by the Director of industrial plant and equipment design and development, Emmanuel Kwaya, during a sensitization workshop in Abuja. According to them, the provision of solutions and treatment to millions of Nigerians affected by poison and toxic substances, especially in mining communities, is crucial for saving lives.

Initially operational from 8 am to 5 pm, the Centre intends to expand its services to a 24/7 basis. It will also impose a nominal fee for toll line services, with the ultimate goal of providing free services to the public. Individuals or communities exposed to toxins and hazardous substances are encouraged to contact the Centre’s toll line for immediate assistance during emergencies.

The Centre’s toxicology experts have been specifically trained to handle cases of poisoning and toxic exposure, a critical measure in preventing unnecessary fatalities. The Centre’s primary objective is to bridge the information gap and disseminate accurate information, particularly to individuals involved in the mining industry.

The Centre is open to collaboration with both government agencies and international partners, ensuring that it remains abreast of the latest information and developments in toxicology and poisoning issues. Additionally, the Centre’s services have been translated into the three major languages of Nigeria to ensure accessibility to vital information and support, even in rural areas in cases of poison exposure.

Furthermore, the Project Lead of the Centre, Prof. Anoka Nja, underscored the importance of raising awareness about toxicology and poisoning issues in Nigeria. Numerous deaths have occurred due to toxic and chemical substance exposure, and the establishment of the Centre will provide a designated platform for reporting instances of danger or toxic substances, as well as offering advisory services, support, and guidance to those in need.

In conclusion, the establishment of the Toxicology Information Centre by the RMRDC marks a significant stride towards preventing needless deaths caused by poison and toxic exposure in Nigeria. It reflects a steadfast commitment to saving lives and offering vital support and information to those affected by toxicology and poisoning issues.
