The Retirement of 113 Nigerian Army Generals

A significant number of Nigerian Army Generals, totalling 113, have formally retired from their military service. The group of retirees consists of one General, one Lieutenant-General, 67 Major-Generals, and 44 Brigadier-Generals.

During the retirement ceremony, the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, announced the news and assured the ex-service men that they would promptly receive their pension entitlements. This noteworthy event underscores the Nigerian Army’s dedication to upholding democracy and the nation’s progress, as stated in a release by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu.

The Minister commended the unwavering support of the Nigerian Army in strengthening democracy within the country, urging members of the Armed Forces to remain loyal and continue to promote democratic principles in Nigeria and abroad. Nwachukwu further emphasised the pivotal role of the Armed Forces in upholding democracy in West Africa and globally, acknowledging their influential presence on the international stage.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that this occasion offered the Nigerian Army an opportunity to reflect on its service and the profound dedication demonstrated by the retiring and retired senior officers. Nwachukwu also assured that the Federal Government is dedicated to improving the welfare of both serving and retired military personnel.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, conveyed his sentiments during a regimental dinner held to honour the retired senior officers for their dedicated service to the Nigerian Army. He extended his congratulations to them for their remarkable contributions throughout their careers and wished them well in their future endeavours beyond the military.

This significant occasion serves as a testament to both the resilience and unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Army in safeguarding the interests of the nation and upholding democratic values.
