Nigeria’s Holiday Travel Special: Free Train Rides and 50% Off Bus Fares
In order to facilitate more affordable holiday travel for Nigerian citizens, the government has officially announced the provision of complimentary train journeys and a 50% reduction in public bus fares nationwide during the festive season. This decision, sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu, aims to alleviate the financial strain often associated with holiday travel, enabling domestic travellers to visit their loved ones and hometowns without the burden of exorbitant transportation costs.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development and chair of the inter-ministerial committee on presidential intervention, Dele Alake, has emphasized that the discounted inter-state fares and complimentary train rides will be operational from Thursday until 4th January. The government has partnered with luxury bus companies servicing 22 routes to enforce the fare reduction, ensuring widespread accessibility for travellers.
Transport Minister Sa’idu Alkali has articulated that the significant reduction in bus fares and the provision of complimentary train journeys will offer an opportunity for every Nigerian to partake in the festive season without enduring excessive transportation costs. This special offer is specifically targeted towards the general populace, which is the reason why air transportation has not been included in the arrangement.
Segun Falade, the spokesperson for the National Union of Road Transport Workers, has confirmed the readiness of bus operators to implement the fare subsidy as agreed.
