A Secure and Peaceful Festive Season in Kwara State
With the Christmas and New Year fast approaching, extensive measures have been implemented to secure every part of Kwara state against potential security threats. Ilorin, the state capital, has garnered a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful cities, boasting a relatively low crime rate compared to other regions in the country. However, it is important to note that the city still faces security challenges such as kidnapping, cultism, illegal mining, and drug trafficking.
As Kwara state serves as a pivotal link between the northern and southern states of Nigeria, security agencies have taken proactive steps to safeguard the region during the festive season. The Nigerian Army, Nigerian Customs Service, the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and the Federal Road Safety Commission have all implemented strategic measures to ensure a peaceful and secure yuletide season.
In October, the Nigerian Army initiated Operation Still Water III with the objective of deterring criminal elements and preventing them from establishing a foothold in the state. This military exercise, conducted by troops from the 22 Armoured Brigade in Sobi, Ilorin, was launched in Oro Ago in Ifelodun local government area and surrounding regions. The operation aims to create a peaceful and stable environment for festive celebrations and to promote thriving economic activities without fear and panic. The state government has emphasized the importance of public support in providing vital information for eradicating criminal elements within the state.
The Nigerian Customs Services has also intensified efforts to secure the nation’s border towns connecting Kwara. The Kwara Area Command has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing smuggling activities, particularly during the festive season, and has pledged to enforce the ban on specific items such as foreign rice, used vehicles, and dangerous drugs.
Furthermore, the state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has activated Operation Gbailumo, which is geared towards combating drug and substance abuse within the state. The operation involves raiding known drug hideouts, conducting targeted patrols, monitoring illegal drug trafficking activities, and raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. The collaboration between the state government and the NDLEA is a key part of efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.
Additionally, over 2,500 personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been deployed across the state to preempt potential security threats. The deployment focuses on key areas prone to threats, including prayer grounds, worship centres, recreational facilities, motor parks, markets, and critical installations.
Moreover, the Police have reminded residents of the state about the ban on the use of fireworks, firecrackers, or any other explosive devices due to the extensive damage, injuries, and threat to public safety that they pose. The Federal Road Safety Corps has also deployed personnel for special patrol operations aimed at reducing road traffic fatalities and addressing traffic congestion during the festive season.
These coordinated efforts by various security agencies reflect a proactive and decisive approach towards ensuring a secure and peaceful festive season in Kwara state. It is imperative for residents to comply with safety regulations and support these initiatives to uphold a safe environment for all during the celebratory period.
