The Succession Question: What Happens After Governor Akeredolu’s Passing?

The recent demise of Ondo Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has prompted deliberations regarding the succession of leadership in the state. Akeredolu, fondly referred to as Aketi, passed away at the age of 67 after a prolonged illness. He had served as the Ondo Governor since 2016 and secured re-election for a second term in 2020. Throughout his tenure, he vocally advocated for restructuring and strongly opposed illegal mining and open grazing in the state and southern Nigeria.

In light of the regrettable passing of the incumbent governor, inquiries have emerged concerning the succession procedure in accordance with the law. According to the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, in the event of the demise of an elected governor, the Deputy Governor of the State will assume the position of Governor. Section 191(1) of the constitution explicitly states, “The Deputy Governor of a State shall hold the office of Governor of the State if the office of Governor becomes vacant by reason of death, resignation, impeachment, permanent incapacity, or removal of the governor from office for any other reason in accordance with sections 188 or 189 of this constitution.”

Therefore, in accordance with the constitutional provision, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Acting Governor, is slated to be sworn in as the substantive governor of Ondo. This procedural framework guarantees a seamless transition of authority and the continuity of governance in the state.

As the citizens grieve the loss of Governor Akeredolu, it is imperative to adhere to the legal and constitutional protocols for succession to uphold stability and order in the state government. The leadership transition is expected to be a solemn but crucial process, ushering in a new chapter in Ondo’s governance.

In conclusion, the passing of Governor Akeredolu has necessitated the ascension of a new leader in Ondo. The constitutional provisions delineating the succession process have confirmed that Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Acting Governor, will assume the role of Governor. As the state mourns the loss of a revered leader, the transfer of authority will mark the dawn of a new era in Ondo’s governance, guided by the precepts of the law and constitution.
