Illegal Chinese Miners Apprehended in Taraba: A Serious Violation of the Law
Operatives from the Special Taskforce Committee on Environmental Protection, Public Safety, and Prohibition of Deforestation have successfully apprehended two Chinese nationals in Taraba State for engaging in illegal mining activities. The illicit miners, Mr Ma Weixiang and Mr Yu Renang, were intercepted while en route to a newly discovered mineral deposits site in Serti, the administrative headquarters of Gashaka local government council of the state.
The suspects were found transporting heavy power plants and water pumps intended for use at the mineral deposits site, in clear violation of the Executive Order suspending mining activities in the state. Retired General Jeremiah Faransa, the Chairman of the Taskforce, revealed this development to the public during a press briefing in Jalingo, the state capital.
The apprehension of the Chinese nationals followed intelligence gathered by the special taskforce during aerial surveillance across the central zone of the state. General Faransa emphasized his unwavering commitment to enforcing the Executive Order and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their status, are held accountable for their actions.
He expressed, “I have vowed that if anyone is caught in the act, I will not hesitate to deal with any culprit, regardless of their status. If anyone thinks they’re above the law, I will teach so many people lessons on respecting government orders.” This zero-tolerance approach serves as a clear message that the government is determined to uphold the law and protect the natural resources of the state.
Governor Agbu Kefas’ intentions for the state were highlighted, with an appeal to citizens to cooperate with the government. General Faransa stressed the urgent need for attitudinal changes to curb revenue loss, stating, “People still think that Kefas’ administration will be like the past. What miracle do you want the governor to perform if we don’t address these issues?”
The items seized from the arrested Chinese nationals, including water pumps and trucks used to convey power plants, will be presented as evidence before a special mobile court in Jalingo for prosecution. This legal action against the suspects sends a strong message that illegal activities will not be tolerated.
The apprehension of the Chinese nationals serves as a reminder that the government is committed to protecting the environment and enforcing regulations to prevent unlawful exploitation of natural resources. The successful intervention by the Special Taskforce Committee is a testament to the effectiveness of targeted surveillance and robust law enforcement measures to uphold the rule of law. It is imperative for all individuals and entities operating within the state to adhere to regulatory guidelines and contribute to sustainable development.
The apprehension of the Chinese nationals marks a significant step in combating illegal mining activities in the state, and serves as a warning to those who seek to flout the law for personal gain. The actions of the Special Taskforce Committee exemplify the government’s steadfast commitment to preserving the environment and upholding the law, ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions.
