The Plight of Nigerian Victims Fleeing Terrorist Attacks in Plateau and Benue

Chima Christian, Executive Director of Africa’s Morning Centre for Public Policy & Good Governance, has brought to light a troubling situation in North Central Nigeria. In a recent interview on Arise News, Christian expressed deep concerns regarding the takeover of houses left behind by victims fleeing terrorist attacks.

Christian revealed that the terrorists not only carry out attacks, but also settle in the abandoned communities, preventing the displaced individuals from returning to their homes. He highlighted the fact that the assailants possess advanced weapons, surpassing those of the Nigerian Army, indicating that they are well-equipped terrorists rather than ordinary pastoralists.

Specific examples were provided by Christian to illustrate the severity of the problem. Communities in Kwande local government area of Benue State and former mining sites in Plateau have been seized by the attackers, making it nearly impossible for the displaced victims to safely return to their homes.

Christian also criticised the National Population Commission (NPC) for their plans to count new settlements near demolished houses in the upcoming census, rather than acknowledging the demolished houses themselves. He emphasised the urgent need for official recognition and intervention in these occupied areas.

Furthermore, Christian highlighted the significant power imbalance between the victims and the heavily armed attackers, making it nearly impossible for the victims to defend themselves and their homes.

In conclusion, Christian urged the government to address this crisis with the seriousness it deserves. He called for the official recognition of the attackers as a terrorist organisation, similar to the approach taken with Boko Haram, in order to effectively address the issue and ensure the safety of the victims. Without such recognition, the government’s response to the issue will fall short, leaving the victims in continued danger and hardship.
