Military and Police Step Up Surveillance in Restive Plateau Communities
Security personnel, comprising of both military and police forces, have augmented their presence in the volatile communities of Plateau state in response to a series of violent assaults. These assaults, which transpired on Christmas Eve, specifically targeted 25 communities in Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin Local Government Areas, resulting in the tragic loss of over 150 lives and the displacement of more than 10,000 residents.
The affected communities also incurred substantial damage to property, leaving numerous individuals and families in dire need of assistance. Some of the displaced persons have expressed their eagerness to return to their homes, but have raised concerns about the persistent security threats that hinder their safe repatriation.
Kefas Mallai, the Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, has underscored the plight of the displaced persons, underscoring their pressing need to reclaim their communities and livelihoods. He has called for prompt action by security forces to eradicate the perpetrators and reinstate safety to the region.
In response to the mounting security crisis, the Plateau State Police Command has reassured the public that surveillance and patrols will be ongoing until a lasting peace is established. The State Police Command has emphasized its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and has appealed for the community’s support in addressing these challenges.
Moreover, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has conveyed a message of determination from the Federal Government, assuring the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and safeguarding the nation. Matawalle’s visit to Plateau state, accompanied by senior military officials, underscored the government’s proactive approach in addressing the security situation and providing assistance to affected communities.
During his visit, Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed gratitude for the government’s quick response and emphasised the significance of safeguarding the region’s abundant mineral resources and national infrastructure. He stressed the importance of restoring peace and stability in the area to facilitate the safe return of displaced individuals and ensure the protection of critical assets.
As the combined efforts of security forces and government officials persist, the people of Plateau state remain hopeful that these measures will lead to a sustainable resolution of the security challenges facing their communities.
