2024: President Tinubu’s Commitments to the Nigerian People
As we commenced the year 2024, the citizens of Nigeria took the opportunity to reflect on the trials and triumphs of the previous year. The election of the country’s leaders to steer its course for the next four years was met with much anticipation and optimism for a brighter future. Despite legal challenges from opponents, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress emerged victorious in the presidential election, with the Supreme Court ultimately confirming his position as the President of Nigeria.
President Tinubu’s administration inherited a host of intricate issues, including escalating living costs, insecurity, and widespread inflation. In his inaugural address, President Tinubu announced significant policy changes, such as the elimination of petroleum subsidies and the consolidation of the currency exchange rate. However, these decisions also led to a sharp rise in the cost of living, with inflation reaching an unprecedented 28% in 2023- the highest since 2005.
In response to the effects of inflation, President Tinubu’s administration pledged to provide financial relief to 15 million Nigerians over a three-month period, as well as wage increases for civil servants and pensioners. However, the fulfilment of these commitments has been a matter of contention, as numerous citizens are yet to receive the support they were promised.
In addition, the administration is grappling with a surge in killings carried out by bandits and non-state actors. While these security challenges were inherited from the previous administration, recent events such as the Tudun-Biri bomb incidents and the Christmas Eve tragedy in Plateau have underscored the urgent need for robust security measures to protect the lives of Nigerians, which is the fundamental duty of the government.
It is evident that the approach to addressing banditry and related crimes must evolve, shifting away from purely militaristic tactics towards inclusive, community-driven solutions. The underlying causes of these issues, such as cattle theft, land disputes, and secessionist agendas, necessitate a nuanced and inclusive approach, including meaningful dialogue with non-state actors who have taken up arms against the state.
In his New Year message, President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitments to ensuring a living wage for civil servants and improving electricity supply. He also promised to hold underperforming ministers accountable for their actions. While these assurances have provided some comfort to the people, it is vital for President Tinubu’s administration to take concrete steps to honour these commitments, particularly amidst the prevailing economic challenges, insecurity, and inflationary pressures.
In conclusion, the year 2024 holds considerable significance for Nigerians, as they await the fulfilment of President Tinubu’s pledges and the realization of renewed hope for a brighter future. It is imperative for the administration to translate words into actions, addressing the urgent issues facing the nation and demonstrating unwavering dedication to enhancing the lives of its citizens.
