In a recent meeting, The Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, espoused a sense of confidence regarding the reinstatement of the revoked license for OML 46, also known as Atala Oilfield, to Bayelsa State. The revocation of the license in April 2020 was met with controversy, as it is a pivotal asset for the economic advancement of the state.

During a visit to Governor Douye Diri at the Government House in Yenagoa, Lokpobiri conveyed his regret over the revocation and vowed to utilize his influence to return the oilfield to Bayelsa. He sought collaboration with the state government to address various issues affecting the region and ensure that Bayelsa reaps the dividends of democracy.

Additionally, the minister underscored the detrimental impacts of pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, resulting in decreased revenue from the federation account for oil-producing states. He also articulated concerns about the environmental degradation caused by illegal bunkering activities, emphasizing the significance of safeguarding the state’s natural resources.

In response, Governor Diri commended Lokpobiri on his appointment and expressed readiness to cooperate with the federal government to combat oil theft and illegal bunkering, which have had adverse effects on the local ecosystem. He underscored the necessity for collaboration among governors of the Niger Delta states to collectively address these challenges.

Furthermore, Diri raised the matter of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Company in Bonny, Rivers State, sourcing a significant portion of its gas supply from Bayelsa, yet remitting taxes to Rivers, thereby depriving Bayelsa of its rightful income. He reiterated his stance on fiscal federalism and resource control as crucial determinants of the genuine financial viability of states.

As the discussion concluded, both parties acknowledged the importance of working in tandem to address these pressing issues and pave the way for a more prosperous future for Bayelsa. The reinstatement of the Atala Oilfield remains a focal point in the government’s endeavours to foster economic growth and environmental sustainability in the region.
