Saving Lives: The Establishment of Toxicology Information Centre by RMRDC
The Toxicology Information Centre (TIC) has been established in the FCT by the Raw Materials and Research Development Council (RMRDC). The primary objective of this Centre is to offer comprehensive information on toxic and hazardous chemicals in order to prevent avoidable fatalities in the country. This significant initiative is expected to have a substantial impact by serving as a hub for all harmful materials based on data and processing.
The field of toxicology plays a crucial role in understanding the detrimental effects of chemical substances on people, animals, and the environment. The mining industry has caused various environmental damages, including ecological disruption, destruction of natural flora and fauna, air, land, and water pollution, instability of soil and rock masses, landscape degradation, and radiation hazards. The establishment of the Toxicology Information Centre is timely and necessary to address these issues.
During a sensitisation seminar to establish the TIC, Professor Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, represented by Emmanuel Kwaya, highlighted the Centre’s objectives. The TIC aims to provide toxicological information, continuous data collection, and serve as a point of contact for individuals and communities exposed to hazardous materials. This landmark event is significant as it addresses the lack of reliable data on Chemical Toxicity in the country.
The call to establish the Toxicology Information Centre stemmed from the tragic lead poisoning outbreak in artisanal mining communities in Zamfara State. The devastating incident resulted in several fatalities and permanent disabilities, prompting the government and the RMRDC to take proactive measures to address the dangers of mineral and chemical contamination. As a result, the TIC will provide verifiable sources of toxicological information and support structure-activity relationship studies.
The Project Lead, Prof. Anoka Njan, emphasized the significance of the Centre in preventing toxicity and supporting individuals in need. The establishment of the TIC is a significant step towards addressing toxicology and poisoning issues in Nigeria. The Centre will also play a pivotal role in providing support and advisory services to those exposed to hazardous chemicals. Similarly, Egnr Obasi Ettu commended the RMRDC for establishing the toxicology division and underscored the importance of promoting human safety, especially in the mining sector.
In conclusion, the establishment of the Toxicology Information Centre is a commendable effort by the Raw Materials and Research Development Council. This initiative is crucial in addressing the adverse effects of toxic and hazardous materials and preventing unnecessary deaths. By providing valuable data and support, the TIC will undoubtedly contribute to the overall improvement of safety and wellbeing in Nigeria.
