Kwara State has adopted a proactive approach in addressing illicit mining activities within its boundaries, as outlined by Abdulquawiy Olododo, the State Commissioner for the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. At the recent 5th National Council on Mining and Minerals Resources Development (NCMMRD) in Ilorin, Olododo underscored the significance of collaborating with security agencies and federal authorities to tackle illegal mining activities.

The state government’s objective is to organize miners into cooperatives and ensure compliance with government regulations, with penalties for those who violate the rules. The renewed effort to attract investors through the revalidation of expired licenses demonstrates the state’s commitment to promoting responsible mining practices.

In addition to addressing illegal mining, Olododo emphasized the essential role of synergy between state and federal governments in effectively implementing mining policies. He stressed the importance of grassroots participation in policy implementation, emphasizing the significance of community engagement and cooperation.

Regarding the decline in illegal mining activities, Olododo provided assurance that the state’s initiatives to automate systems and enhance collaboration with security agencies have yielded positive outcomes. He noted a significant reduction in illegal mining incidents due to the coordinated efforts of various security agencies, including the NSCDC, police, and EFCC.

The potential contribution of the mining sector to Nigeria’s economic diversification was a key topic of discussion. Olododo acknowledged the country’s historical reliance on a mono-economy but expressed optimism about the sector’s role in achieving financial and economic development, given Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources.

Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministries of Solid Minerals Development and Steel Development, further emphasized the necessity of collaboration between state and federal governments to promote the development of solid minerals. She highlighted the role of critical minerals in the global energy transition and called for partnerships to tap into Nigeria’s substantial mineral reserves.

The theme of the event, “Minerals and metals sector: a panacea for economic growth and diversity,” underscores the nation’s commitment to strategically position itself in the evolving global economic landscape. Stakeholders from government agencies and the private sector demonstrated their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s mineral and metal resources sector at the event.

The gathering provided a platform to deliberate on key issues affecting the sector, with discussions on policy reforms, investment opportunities, community engagement, environmental sustainability, and fostering innovation in the sector. Dr. Ogbe highlighted the global shift towards electric cars, citing China as an example where a significant portion of vehicles are electrically powered. This transition underscores the need to harness Nigeria’s solid mineral resources sustainably and effectively.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of Kwara State and the federal government, as well as the commitment of stakeholders in the mining sector, bode well for the economic development of the region. With a focus on responsible mining practices, policy reforms, and strategic partnerships, Kwara is poised to play a significant role in Nigeria’s economic growth and diversification.
