Strengthened Collaboration of Federal Ministries to Reduce Environmental Impact of Mining
The Federal Ministries of Solid Minerals Development and Environment are working together to ensure that mining operations have minimal negative effects on the environment, in accordance with international standards. This collaborative effort is aimed at safeguarding the environment from the potentially harmful impact of mining activities.
Dr Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, emphasised the commitment of the Federal Government in securing mining areas, removing obstacles to smooth operations, and ensuring that mining processes comply with global standards of minimal environmental impact. During a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Dr Alake reiterated the need to ensure that mining operations do not adversely affect the environment.
The Minister of Environment, Lawal, also stressed the importance of protecting the environment from degradation due to mining activities. He highlighted the recent launch of the solid minerals roadmap, which addresses the issue of environmental impact, recognising that mining inevitably affects the environment. As a result, the two ministries are closely collaborating to ensure that mining activities are within the acceptable limits of environmental impact.
