A catastrophic explosion resulting from improperly stored explosives has led to the tragic deaths of three individuals and injuries to 77 others in Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s most populous cities. The explosion, which affected over 20 buildings, has prompted a comprehensive rescue effort to locate and assist anyone who may be trapped in the wreckage.

The incident, occurring at approximately 7.45pm local time on Tuesday, caused widespread alarm in the densely populated city, prompting a mass evacuation from homes and businesses. In the aftermath of the explosion, security forces have secured the area, while emergency medical personnel and ambulances stand by to provide essential support during ongoing rescue operations.

Preliminary investigations, led by Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, have indicated that the explosion was due to improperly stored explosives intended for illegal mining activities. Governor Makinde has assured the public that thorough search and rescue efforts are underway, describing the damage as “devastating.”

Sadly, a body was recovered by rescue workers on Wednesday morning, bringing the death toll to three individuals. While those responsible for storing the explosives remain unidentified, Governor Makinde has pledged that all accountable parties will be held responsible.

The governor has also committed to covering the medical expenses of the injured victims and providing temporary accommodation for those whose homes were affected by the blast. The site of the explosion is marked by destroyed and dust-covered buildings, with a significant crater serving as a poignant reminder of the devastation caused.

The use of explosives in illegal mining activities has long been a concern for Nigerian authorities, particularly as the practice often occurs in remote areas where oversight and enforcement are challenging. Anthony Adejuwon, a leader of the Urban Alert group advocating for mineral resources accountability, emphasized the dangers of storing explosive materials near residential areas and stressed the need for stricter controls and regulations.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the hazards associated with illegal mining and underscores the urgency of implementing more stringent safety measures to protect communities from such catastrophic explosions.
